Is it an emergency?

Call right away if:

Water is actively coming through a ceiling or light fixture.
Part of the roof is missing, torn open or punctured (a fallen branch or tree).
Shingles or flashing were blown off and more rain or snow is forecast.
A ceiling is sagging with water.

If it’s a slow drip or old damage, a roof leak repair or free inspection is usually the better route.

What to do right now

Get safe. Stay off the roof. Keep people away from sagging ceilings and anything electrical near water. If a tree is on the house, or there’s structural damage or downed wires, call 911 or your utility first.
Limit the damage, if it’s safe to. Move belongings, catch water, and cover openings from inside. The Insurance Bureau of Canada notes that your policy requires you to act to limit further damage. That often means an emergency tarp, which should be put on by a professional if the roof isn’t safe.
Document everything. Take photos and video before cleanup, and keep receipts for tarps and emergency work.
Call your insurer. Most have a 24-hour claims line. A proof of loss is typically due within 30 days.

Ontario’s storm season is real

The May 21, 2022 derecho caused more than $720 million in insured damage in Ontario.
The March 2025 ice storm in Ontario and Quebec was Canada’s costliest severe-weather event of 2025.

Wind lifts shingles and flashing, hail bruises and cracks them, and ice loads eavestroughs and edges. Damage isn’t always visible from the ground, so after a major storm it’s worth a free inspection even if nothing is leaking yet.
